Inquiries effect on credit scores, state of Maine #n523

Message to Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection superintendent #DotGov

Subject: information, credit score, inquiries

I am a journalist on deadline, and I am writing about your state. See this message and your response at http://creditscoring.com/in... .

Your website states, "The algorithms used to create credit scores treat each individual credit inquiry without the extension of credit as a declination by the lender."

However, according to the consumer reporting agency Experian: "Simply because no new account appears does not indicate your application was declined. It's quite possible you simply chose not to accept the loan or credit account."

What is your evidence?

Also, what is your policy with regard to time if you find an error in something published by your state? In other words, from the date of this alert, how long do you have to make a correction?

My deadline is tomorrow. #1504M #n523 #DotGov

Dear Mr. Fisher:

Thank you for your FOAA request. We will look at the issue and respond as quickly as we can. The question is complicated by the proprietary nature of the exact methods by which credit scores are calculated, but that makes it all the more important for information to be accurate.

Thanks also for offering to point out an unconnected link or links you said you identified on our website.

Thank you for talking.

To make a point about the origins of alleged facts, I spent a long time asking for the source of information about something that did not exist. That point made, I don't plan on repeating the exercise; the onus lies with the person making a claim. It is not up to me to prove a statement wrong as much as it is the person making the statement to prove himself right. What is can be pointed to. What is not is infinite. I know of nothing that supports the statement I bring to your attention.

We know much more than we did in 1997 (although I have still not identified Rachel at Cardholder Services; she just called, again, today, and is, apparently, somewhere in India). Perhaps the credit score company will respond. But if they never made such a statement in the first place, they have no responsibility to do so.

On "Credit Reports: Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection" ("Obtaining a Credit Report"), the link "Consumer Guide to Credit Reports" returns a page that says, "We're sorry, but the page you requested cannot be found."

As I copied that sentence, this is the entire message that appears when I paste it: "We're sorry, but the page you requested cannot be found - See more at: http://www.maine.gov/pfr/cons... ."

I did not know that my request was a FOAA one (I didn't even know what FOAA is), specifically, but I'll go with that for now. Citizens in Maine are wise.
